HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT STEAM TABLE FOR YOUR EVENT
Published on  Updated on

If you have an event coming up and you are considering getting a steam table for the buffet, you are on the right track! There is hardly a better way to present a wide selection of dishes for self-service while keeping them fresh, warm, and delicious for your guests. However, there are many kinds of steam tables out there, and selecting one that matches the size and style of your event can sometimes be really time-consuming. You might need some direction, and we are here to provide it!

Let's discuss some factors you must consider when picking a steam table for your event!

1. Start with the Type of Steam Table

i. Electric vs. Gas Steam Tables

Though they both serve the same purpose, electric steam tables are different from gas steam tables in some crucial ways. If you are going to get a steam table for an event, the first decision you have to make is whether to get an electric or gas model.

Electric Steam Tables

The main advantage of electric steam tables is that they are easier to install and easily portable. This makes them ideal for smaller operations or events where the food might need to be moved around a lot.

If your party is going to be a relatively small one, there is no need to spend the extra bucks to get a big five-well steam table. A smaller two-well stream table or a three-well option should suffice.

  • Generally speaking, electric steam tables also offer more precise temperature control, which can be an added advantage.

Gas Steam Tables

If you are organizing a large event with hundreds (or maybe thousands) of guests, you might want to consider a gas steam table. They are typically more powerful, bigger, and better for high-volume commercial settings. They tend to be great for continuous use.

  • Remember, however, that you will require a gas hookup if you opt for a gas steam table.

ii. Hot vs Cold Steam Tables

Many people mistakenly think that hot steam tables are the only kind of steam table. Hot steam tables are more popular because they have become the standard choice for keeping food warm and safe at buffets or catered events.

A steam table is an equipment that keeps food at ideal temperatures, whether hot or cold. If you will be serving a lot of cold food items at your event, you might want to consider a cold steam table.

  • Some steam tables have both hot and cold options, which is great for serving both hot entrees and chilled salads or desserts.

2. Number of Compartments (Pan Capacity)

How much food do you intend to serve at your event? Steam tables come in various sizes, so it is important to choose one that matches the scale of your event.

  • Depending on how many dishes you’ll be serving, pick a steam table with enough compartments to hold multiple food pans. As we shall discuss later, there are steam tables with as many as four and five compartments.
  • Check the menu and make sure the steam table can accommodate different pan sizes for flexibility. Full-size pans are ideal for large dishes, while half or third-size pans work for side dishes or sauces.

    3. Portability

Different steam tables suit different kinds of events. If you foresee that your steam table will need to be moved frequently (such as for catering or mobile events), opt for a smaller, more mobile model.

Stationary steam tables are better suited for permanent locations, like restaurants or cafeterias, where they will not have to be moved much. If you must use a larger steam table at the event, then at least ensure it has wheels for mobility.

    4. Temperature Control

It is always advisable to look for a steam table with features to enable you to adjust the level of heat it produces. Steam tables with adjustable thermostats or temperature controls to suit a larger variety of dishes (e.g., hotter for meats, cooler for delicate vegetables).

    • Ensure that the steam table can maintain consistent temperature across all compartments to avoid uneven heating or cold spots.

    5. Construction and Durability

Stainless steel is the most common material for steam tables. It is durable and more resistant to rust, and it is also easier to clean.

Choose a stainless-steel steam table for a reliable performance, but also to reduce the hassle of after-event clean-up.

    6. Insulation and Energy Efficiency

Good insulation reduces heat loss, keeps food at the proper temperature for longer, and saves energy. Proper insulation ensures that your guests get the best quality food.

    • Insulated steam tables also make it easier to maintain food temperature with less power usage.
    • It is always advisable to ensure that the steam table you get is designed for lower power consumption, especially if it will be running for extended periods.

    Brand Reputation

If you are going to purchase a steam table, the most efficient way to ensure good quality is to look for reputable brands already known for producing reliable and efficient steam tables. These brands usually have years of experience in providing equipment and perfecting their models.
