Why UL Certification Matters? Why Wilprep Kitchen Is Committed to It?

As safety standards in commercial kitchens continue to rise, more and more equipment brands are prioritizing UL certification — a mark of quality, compliance, and trust. For Wilprep Kitchen, this isn't just a trend — it's a commitment.

In early 2024, we made a strategic decision: moving forward, all electric products will meet UL standards. While our previous equipment carried ETL certification, the growing market demand and the higher recognition of UL prompted us to upgrade. UL's stricter testing protocols and wider industry acceptance ensure that Wilprep products not only perform — but also meet the highest safety expectations.

This shift reflects our dedication to product innovation, long-term reliability, and helping our customers operate with full confidence.

What Is UL Certification?

1. A Globally Trusted Safety Mark
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is a leading third-party testing and certification organization, recognized worldwide for setting strict safety standards.

2. Essential in the Commercial Kitchen Industry
For restaurants, catering facilities, and foodservice operators, UL-listed equipment is often required by local codes, inspectors, and insurers — making it a key factor in equipment selection.

3. Focus on Battery Safety
In electric kitchen appliances with battery components, UL testing emphasizes fire prevention, overheating protection, and explosion resistance — ensuring equipment performs safely in high-demand environments.

UL Certification FAQ

Q: Why did Wilprep Kitchen decide to pursue UL certification?

A: UL is one of the most recognized safety certifications in the North American market, especially for commercial kitchen equipment. Although Wilprep’s previous products were ETL-certified, we chose UL to:

  • Meet increasing demand from enterprise buyers
  • Elevate product credibility and trustworthiness
  • Align with international safety and hygiene standards

Q: What stage is Wilprep currently in?

A: As of May 2025, Wilprep is in the product sampling and internal evaluation stage. Mold trials have been completed, and prototype samples are being prepared for submission to UL for final testing.

Q: Why apply for UL when ETL was already acquired?

A: ETL certification covers basic safety standards, but UL is more widely recognized in the commercial appliance industry. Wilprep is upgrading its product line to meet stricter standards and to appeal to a broader professional customer base. Once UL-certified versions are ready, ETL versions will be phased out.

Q: When will the UL-certified products be available?

A: We’re targeting December 2025 for the official launch. This is based on current development and certification timelines, with cooperation across engineering, compliance, logistics, and marketing departments.

Q: Were there any redesigns or resubmissions during the process?

A: We didn’t require sample resubmissions, but several key design updates were made early on, including:

  • Adjustments to internal components
  • Material upgrades for fire resistance and sanitation
  • Cosmetic enhancements to match UL hygiene expectations

Q: What ensures Wilprep can stay on track?

A: Wilprep’s certification process is driven by:

  • Cross-departmental coordination
  • Pre-defined checklists and internal reviews
  • Early planning (as early as Q2 2024)
  • Ongoing communication with UL labs and compliance advisors

Challenges We Faced During UL Certification

1. Product Structure & Feature Adjustments

To meet UL safety requirements, several updates were made:

  • Battery system redesign for better heat and fire protection.
  • Integration of negative oxygen ion and humidification features required extra validation for food safety and electrical compliance.
  • New accessories like beverage racks and preservation boxes were reviewed to ensure structural and functional safety.

2. Communication with UL

  • Some new features didn’t fit neatly into existing UL standards, leading to clarification delays.
  • Technical documents required reformatting to meet UL guidelines.
  • We resolved this by setting up regular meetings with UL and aligning early on expectations, which helped streamline revisions.

We Learned from the UL Certification Journey

1. A Deeper Understanding of Product Safety

UL certification pushed us to evaluate every component with greater care. From fire resistance to electronic insulation, we gained a clearer picture of how safety must be built into design from day one.

2. Smarter Internal Coordination

We realized that successful certification depends on early cross-department alignment—from R&D and engineering to compliance and sourcing. Clear timelines, detailed documentation, and regular check-ins became essential.

3. Future Product Development Insights

Introducing new features like humidification or negative oxygen ions requires in-depth technical research and upfront validation. Moving forward, we’ll involve specialists earlier in the process to ensure innovations are both effective and certifiable.
